A country concert is set to kick off A-Day weekend on The Plains. The Hudson Family Foundation and Auburn Athletics will host the Country Rocks the Plains concert and pep rally on Auburn University’s campus on Friday, April 6.
The event will include an Auburn University pep rally, featuring the Auburn University band, cheerleaders, dance team, Aubie, and coaches and players speaking, and performances by Blane Rudd and country band Brothers Osborne.
The Hudson Family Foundation has hosted concerts in Auburn in the past, the last one in 2016, but never on A-Day weekend.
“We wanted to really look at a part of the Auburn fabric that really needed some attention and we felt like the A-Day weekend would be one that would be exciting for fans to come in and have something that’s not just a football game, but also other activities that we could build around the football game and make it a complete weekend,” said Event Coordinator Brent Hall.
Hall added that the foundation chose to host Brothers Osborne because of the band’s popularity. The band won the “Vocal Duo of the Year” award at the 2017 Country Music Awards and has been nominated for several Grammys.
“They’re really huge with the college-age kids and their sound is one that music lovers of any age can appreciate,” Hall said.
The Hudson Family Foundation was formed in 2008. After former Auburn University and Major League Baseball player Tim Hudson had Tommy John surgery, he and his wife became heavily involved in charity work. During this time, the Hudsons saw a lot of needs from children and their families that they felt weren’t being met in areas in Georgia and Alabama so they formed the Hudson Family Foundation.
The foundation raises funds through personal donors, grants, corporate sponsorships and fundraising events.
Jenny Hall, director of operations for the Hudson Family Foundation, said the foundation thought the concert, which is planned to be an annual event, would be a great opportunity for people to learn more about the foundation.
“We wanted to create this new, fun event that would kind of cast a wider net, so that we could get more people in town, more people doing fun stuff, but also have folks learn more about the foundation and what we do and why we do what we do,” she said. “Concerts have been our thing for a long time and we’re kind of excited to be dipping our toes back in that pool again.”
The Country Rocks the Plains concert will take place at Campus Green, located on the east side of Jordan-Hare Stadium. Gates will open at 6 p.m. the pep rally will begin at 7 p.m., and Brothers Osborne will perform at 8:30 p.m. The concert is a free event, but those wishing to be close to the stage can purchase pit tickets for $30 each.
