Joe and Anthony Russo confirm that the heroic scene featured in the "Avenger: Infinity War" trailer was never intended for the film

Joe and Anthony Russo have confirmed that the heroic shot featuring half the Avengers running towards the camera in the highly-viewed Avenger: Infinity War trailer was never meant for the film.

During an appearance on MTV's Happy Sad Confused podcast, the Russo brothers admitted that the money shot of Captain America, Black Panther, Black Widow, Okoye, Winter Solider, The Hulk, Falcon, and War Machine running towards danger was only intended for the trailer.

Joe Russo said the scene, which was instrumental in generating a great deal of nerd-buzz for the film, was added intentionally as a misdirect. “You have to be very smart about how you cast a trailer,” said Joe Russo. “Cause an audience can watch a trailer and basically tell you what’s gonna happen in the film.”

So, in the hopes of throwing fans off the scent, the directors apparently filmed alternative version of scenes for the trailer itself. It actually makes sense that the scene was only intended for the trailer. As someone who has seen the film…twice (that’s right I said twice), it never really seemed to fit in anywhere.

Contemporary trailers have received fan scrutiny for giving too much of the plot away. Joe Russo stated that the alternative scenes where meant to avoid spoilers for the film. “In other words, if the Hulkbuster suit had made an appearance in the trailer, fans might have been able to piece together more details ahead of Infinity War’s premiere,” said Russo.

Trailer misdirects might be the wave of the future. There are many instances in the Infinity War trailer, which currently sits at 1.7M views, where shots have been flipped, reworked, or include alternative versions of scenes from the film. Although it is easy to foresee scenarios where films could misuse this, it does seem rather satisfying for a fan, to walk into Avenger Infinity War and be truly surprised by the outcome.
