Former Auburn University head football coach Tommy Tuberville announced Saturday that he will be running as a Republican candidate for U.S. Senate.
“After more than a year of listening to Alabama’s citizens, I have heard your concerns and hopes for a better tomorrow,” Tuberville posted on his official Twitter account. “I am humbled to announce the next step – I will be a @GOP candidate for US Senate. I invite you to join my team.”
The post was punctuated with the hashtags #TeamTommy, #ALSen and #MAGA, a reference to President Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan.

Multiple outlets are reporting that former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer is working on Tuberville's campaign.
Spicer retweeted a headline stating such Saturday, adding, "This will be a @gop pickup with #TTuberville in #ALSEN race."
On March 30, the Tommy Tuberville Foundation posted a picture on Facebook of Tuberville and Spicer together at Acre restaurant in Auburn, with the caption, “Great to be with Sean Spicer last night, former White House Press Secretary to President Trump. Enjoyed the opportunity to watch the Auburn game with him and to talk about issues facing our country.”
Tuberville is running as a Republican, vying to take back the seat held by Democrat Doug Jones. U.S. Rep. Bradley Byrne announced in February that he too is seeking the GOP nomination for the seat.
Tuberville’s campaign website, tommyforsenate.com, provided little information Saturday but invited volunteers to sign up.
The primary is scheduled for March 3, 2020.
Tuberville was 85-40 during his 10 years on the Plains (1999-2008), including a 13-0 season in 2004.
