Opelika Planning Commission approves farmer’s market relocation, plats for Wyndham Gates

The Opelika Planning Commission gave its seal of approval to relocation plans for a farmer’s market on Pepperell Parkway during its Feb. 24 meeting.

According to Marty Ogren, assistant planning director for the City of Opelika, the move, requested by Barrett Simpson Inc., comes on the heels of the market having quickly outgrown its current spot.

The market will eventually move to the 2300 block of First Avenue to better accommodate more customers.

“The farmer’s market is at Pepperrell Parkway now, but the guys who run it don’t have enough parking, and they need a larger area,” Ogren said. “So they’re going to build a 13,000-square-foot building with 80 parking spaces, so that’ll be good. This guy’s growing, and he’s done this before.”

While no figure is set in stone, Ogren’s early estimate indicates an investment of approximately $500,000 into the area thanks to the expansion.

“It’s a pretty sizable investment that he’s going to do. With the building and the parking, that’s just my guess off the top of my head,” Ogren said. “We’ll know for sure when we see the building permit.”

Also during the meeting, the commission passed preliminary approval for Wyndham Gates to begin Phase 2 of development, which would see the construction of 149 single-family homes in the area.

“That’s the last stage of the single-family homes. They’ve done about 195 or so already. So that’s good. They’re moving forward and making progress,” Ogren said. “They feel more secure about building these lots and building these homes. It kind of tells us that the economy is staying together. For years they didn’t do anything.”

The commission also approved a request for a public hearing by Lucius Lanier of West Point Properties regarding a 15.5 acre property on North 30th S treet. Ogren said West Point Properties will ask to rezone the area to a commercial C-3 zone in hopes of placing a future development on the land.

“They want to rezone that property to a commercial C-3 zone because they have a buyer for it. It’s hoped that there will be a commercial development there. We don’t know yet, and they don’t even know. They just have a buyer for it who’s really interested, so they’d like to see it rezoned.”

The Planning Commission will have its next meeting on March 24.
