Influenza (Flu) Vaccine:

The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by viruses that infect the nose, throat, and lungs.  It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death.   Flu virus is mainly spread by droplets made when people with the flu cough, sneeze, or talk.  The single best way to prevent the flu is to get a flu vaccine each season.  While flu season can begin as early as October, it is recommended to get your flu shot as soon as they become available, since it takes the body about 2 weeks to produce antibodies to provide protection  against influenza.

The 2012-2013  Influenza Vaccine contains:

an A/California/7/2009(H1/N1)pdm09-like virus; an A/victoria/361/2011-like virus; a B/Wisconsin/1/2010-like virus

Pneumonia Vaccine:

Pneumonia is caused by common bacteria already in your body.  If the body becomes stressed, these bacteria can multiply and cause infection.  According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention  (CDC), the following people at increase risk for pneumoccoccal disease.

-  Greater than 65 years of age  OR

-  2 to 64 years of age with any of the following:

      -  Heart/Kidney/or Liver Disease

      - Diabetes

      - Certain Cancers

      - Organ or Bone Marrow Transplant

      - HIV/AIDS

      - Alcoholism

      - Medication/treatment that affects immune system

      - Patients without a functioning spleen

Shingles Vaccine:

Shingles is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox.  Once a person has had chickenpox, the virus can live, but remain inactive, for many years.  If it becomes active again it can cause shingles.  The risk for shingles increases as you get older.  Shingles can affect anyone who has had chickenpox at anytime without warning.  Shingles can cuse damage to nerves that can cause long-term  nerve pain and can cause other serious problems including, skin infection, muscle weakness, scaring, and decrease or loss of vision or hearing.
